How to Read a Physics Problem Without Panicking

Physics rewards a specific reading habit. Students who score well are rarely faster at algebra — they are simply better at turning a paragraph of text into a labelled diagram.

Draw before you calculate

Read the question once without writing anything. Read it a second time and draw what is happening. Only on the third pass should you start assigning variables.

Name every quantity the question gives you

List the knowns down the left side of your rough work and the unknown you are solving for at the bottom. Most "impossible" problems become routine once written out this way.

If you cannot draw the situation, you have not understood the question yet.

Check the units before the answer

A dimensional check takes ten seconds and catches a surprising share of careless mistakes — often the difference between a good rank and a great one.
